Biography

Greg Ruth is an author and illustrator known for his distinctive style depicting hyper-realism using preferred medium of sumi ink and graphite. Born and raised in Texas, he originally attended Pratt (NYC) for architecture before transitioning into fine arts via painting. By 1993 he began to establish an impassioned career in comics, publishing his first original graphic novel by 2006.

Notably, his art has been featured by publications such as The New York Times and utilized by The Criterion Collection. His collaborations and commissioned work include former President Barack Obama, Academy Award winning actor Ethan Hawke, celebrated writers the Wachowski sisters, and distinguished musicians such as Prince. Additional published work includes Neon, A24, Lionsgate, DC Comics, Fantagraphics Books, Caliber Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Scholastic, Harper Collins, Macmillan, Hyperion, Simon and Schuster, Random House, Slate, CNN, Penguin, and Tor.

His experimental nature has led to the development of the 52 Weeks Project, a self imposed practice of illustrative prompts that have culminated in a published collection of work. In turn, these works have been featured in galleries showcasing themes from Twin Peaks, Game of Thrones, Dune, The Last of Us, and broader topics ranging from the mundanity of wooden log portraiture to more social justice oriented depictions of individuals harmed by state and racially targeted violence.

Ruth remains attentive to his dedicated fan base, often adding personalized embellishments with gold-leaf and crafting commissioned pieces from film and literature that transcend genre and expand on already established historic and imagined worlds. His mentorship and connection to working artists has been shared through comic convention circuits as well as monthly contributions to MUDDY COLORS, an online resource for art, education, and community.

He lives and works in Western Massachusetts.
